About 13 kilometres of river feed into Long Lake. The river flows through the community of Spryfield and into the “Backlands” (between Herring Cove and Purcells Cove roads) where it connects to ponds and wetlands. The McIntosh Run then drains into the Atlantic Ocean through Herring Cove.

Wintergreen, tea berry, Gaultheria procumbens goes Wintergreen, tea berry, Gaultheria procumbens goes by a few different names.

It is a low growing plant, with evergreen leaves that give off a wintergreen scent when crushed. The white flowers lead to red berries that can persist through the winter.

Wintergreen is consumed by white tailed deer, black bears, chipmunks, ring necked pheasants, white footed mice, and more.

You can spot wintergreen along many trails, including the In and Out trail, where these photos were taken.
